A lot of SEO activity without a clear strategy behind it produces exactly what you'd expect: busy reports, rising task counts, and no clear line to revenue. The problem usually isn't a lack of effort. It's the absence of someone whose actual job is deciding what matters most and why, before anyone touches a keyword list or a line of code.
That's what SEO consulting is, distinct from hiring someone to execute tasks. I help you build the strategy, prioritize the roadmap, and make the calls on what's worth doing now versus later, then either guide your team through implementation or work alongside whoever's executing it.

Implementation Guidance
It's worth being precise about this, since "SEO consulting" gets used loosely. Three genuinely different things often get bundled under that label:
Figuring out what to prioritize, why, and in what order. This is the core of what consulting means: judgment and prioritization, not task execution.
Actually writing the content, building the links, implementing the technical fixes. This is what most of my other services on this site cover individually.
A middle ground where I'm involved regularly, not just for a single strategy engagement, providing continuous direction as your situation evolves, sometimes called fractional SEO.
Depending on your situation, you might need one of these, or a combination. Part of an initial consultation is figuring out honestly which one actually fits, rather than defaulting to whichever sounds most comprehensive.
You have some internal capacity (a content person, a developer, or an agency already executing) but lack senior strategic direction on what to prioritize and why. Or you're at a stage where the cost of getting your SEO direction wrong is higher than the cost of paying for senior judgment on it. This is the best scenario to hire an SEO consultant.
If you have zero internal execution capacity and need content produced, links built, and technical fixes implemented simultaneously at volume, that's an execution gap a strategy engagement alone won't close. I can execute many of these directly (see the other services on this site), but if you need several workstreams running in parallel at high volume, an agency's broader team may genuinely be the better fit, and I'll tell you that directly rather than overselling what one person can cover.
What you should expect a real SEO consulting engagement to produce, in the order it typically shows up.
A clear-eyed look at your current SEO situation, what's actually working, what's wasted effort, and what's missing entirely, cutting through the noise of disconnected tactics to identify what's really limiting growth.
Not a list of fifty things to do. A genuinely prioritized plan that says what matters most right now, why, and what the realistic impact and timeline looks like, so you can make informed decisions about where to invest.
Understanding exactly who you're actually competing with for visibility, often a different set of competitors than your business competitors, and where the real openings are.
Working directly with your team or existing execution partners to make sure the strategy actually gets implemented correctly, not just handed over as a document and left to chance.
For engagements that go beyond a single project, regular reviews to adjust the roadmap as your business, competition, and the search landscape itself keep shifting.
You're working directly with the person making the strategic calls, not relaying questions through an account manager to whoever's actually doing the thinking. That has real tradeoffs in both directions, worth being honest about.
Direct access, no layers between you and the judgment being applied to your business, and a partner with real incentive to get your specific situation right rather than fit you into a standardized package.
A single consultant's execution capacity has real limits. If your situation needs multiple deep specialties running in parallel at high volume (content production, technical implementation, and link building simultaneously), an independent consultant is a strategic partner for direction, with execution handled by your team, by me directly where it fits my expertise, or by additional specialists as needed. I'd rather be upfront about that boundary than imply I'm a substitute for a full team when the situation genuinely calls for one.
Both columns matter equally. Honest tradeoffs are part of the offer, not a caveat buried at the bottom.
Short, honest replies to what usually gets asked before an SEO consulting engagement, no evasive framing, no hidden caveats.
